It’ll probably sound like the EX71s and break in a month like every other Sony earbud…

It’s the Audio Technica ATH-CK7 for me.

I’d feel nervous about buying these. Having had 3 pairs of 71’s and 81’s which had a cord that disintegreated, and were subsequently refunded. As a result i’m avoiding sony headphones for the minute. I liked the sound and fit but until the issues with the cord are resolved i won’t be buying another pair - i’ll wait to see what the feed back is. Surely this is the sensible thing to do seeing the numerous problems with the 71’s and 81’s?

Replaced the sony’s with a pair of philips. Sound isn’t as good but they’re reliable.

Basically, wait for a review before you buy is the general message here.

Vincent (07:02:04) :

I had a chance to hear this headphone at the Sony store in Tokyo and they are amazing! Very very comfortable and very easy and natural to put on. Bass is very tight and high sounds very natural..

18 04 2006
Ascariss (18:00:16) :

what about quality of the cord?

19 04 2006
Vincent (05:41:24) :

I didn’t take a close look at the chord but it felt just like any earbud headphones on the market

sealos (15:01:59) :

Looks like Circuit City already has them for sale in their stores and online. going to go buy a pair tonight!

Had a listen to these in Osaka yesterday, not as good as my 71’s but then they do take some time to ‘run-in’ probably great after a month or so. Re the cord, natural oils from your skin harden and attack the plastic outer, and it cracks, wear them away from your skin…

22 04 2006
Stefan1 (13:01:16) :

Chris; did you happen to see the thickness of the cord? Do you any of you recall the cord on the RH1’s remote? The sort of thicker kind? I’m hoping it will be made of that.

Has anyone had a chance to try *burnt-in* versions?

Beethovenian (20:21:43) :

Nobody got these yet? I wonder how it is in terms of volume, how the additional 6db in sensitivity differentiates it from the ex71/81. I always thought thouse were too quiet, and since isolation is not that good, they were not a real option for commuting (at least for classical music). On the other hand, I also always thought that they were very comfortable and wished they could go louder.

Jeff (22:47:27) :

Bought a pair of them in Osaka last week for 99,800 yen (no tax, or tax included.) Loved em…they were not out to be purchased, rather they were locked up and became available only if asking for them in Den Den town. I went back to another store in Den Den town to get a 2nd pair for a gift, and the same story…none shown, but when I showed the clerk (my Japanese is limited to 3 phrases) mine, he opened up a drawyer and sold me a 2nd pair at the exact same price (I didn’t tell him what the 1st pair were) 99,800.

They really do rock…I hear overtones in some songs that I have not heard before…they are rather comfortabloe and well balanced, so that they don’t fall out any more than any other Sony in-ear “Nude” model.

My IPOD now has a 2nd life!!

29 04 2006
Abhinav(stuge) (00:23:38) :

@Jeff ->Hey Man you got these earphones for 99,800(yen)…???????don`t you think you are quoting the wrong price …

30 04 2006
Chris Thomson (02:22:29) :

99,800 is a bit steep, I think that was 9800Y, Jeff, they had a demo pair at Yodabashi Camera (Umeda) opp JR Osaka Stn. Stefan1, the cords looked and felt the same as the full Nude range. Cheers, Chris.

Well, I’ve been using the Ex90’s for a few days now, and allow me to say - if you like Earphones - don’t delay, buy these immediately - yes, they are just that good - no kidding!

THE CORD/CABLE IS MUCH THICKER!

The sound coming from the EX90’s is simply amazing. They have a presence far beyond that of the EX71’s The mids, and highs are so much better articulated; the sound is very ‘natural’. Much the same can be said for the bass response; unlike the EX71 which tended to be a bit bassy in a synthetic way, the bass coming from the EX90’s feels more like ‘being at the actual music venue’.

The larger drivers MAKE a huge differnece.

The EX90’s are a quantum-leap from the EX71’s. Don’t take my word for it… give em a try!

These are earplug/earbud hybrids. I really like the sound. Seems to have a better soundstage (no doubt from the earbud portion) and better controlled midrange and bass (compared to the EX70,71 series). I think the highs are marvellous and not exaggerated. The cord seems to be a bit thicker and tougher than previous series. The only cavaet is comfort. These are fairly large drivers — basically it’s a earbud/earplug hybrid, so, for me, a comfortable fit is a bit tricky. I have to twist them forward slightly so the earplug and the earbud both fit.

Just upgraded to the MDREX90SL from a pair of EX71 which I have had for two years. Pretty happy with the EX71 headphones which stopped working after I accidentally stepped on the moulded plastic where the left and right cords meet. I’m pretty rough with my headphones and use them every working day so a two year life span is pretty good. I bought the MDREX90SL from Yodabashi, Shinjuku for just under 10000 YEN. Cord is a little thicker and has a matt finish similar to a past set of MDR888, in addition the plastic junction where left and right meet has changed to a sleeker pod made of a less brittle plastic. But the most important question, how do they sound? MDREX90SL do not block external external sound as good as the EX71 due to the earplug/earbud design. I guess this is due to the holes in the earbud design. So when I use them on the train there is a little more external sound, a little disappointing but its a little give and take. The give is in the greater dynamic range, I find that the treble and bass are improved over the EX71 and the sound is more natural and open. On the EX71 I had to use the Jazz EQ on my iPod Nano to get the treble and bass I wanted, now I am more than content with no equilization which means longer play time on the iPod. I definitely prefer the sound from the MDREX90SL even if it is at the expense of a little less sound isolation.
