NW-A800 Series Revealed

To confirm the above spy pictures we are releasing to the world, sony.de (screenshot) has revealed the shape of the upcoming Nano-sized video Walkman we exclusively announced last week and alongside it is a timer counting down to March 1st (which is the supposed announcement date of the NW-A800 series). Four colors will be introduced: violet, black, blue, pink. Keep an eye on ATRACLife as we will continue to reveal more specifications and pictures of this amazing device up until announcement day. Picture of the backside after the jump.

ok, I´ll be honest:
I don´t like it.
It looks kinda old fashioned and dorky.
It´ll be a good competitor to Ipod NANO, but it´s definately not what sony needs right now.
I hope the specs are more impressive.

Typical, maby if they had resealed it near xmas they would get some sales!
This could be interesting. Although, it’s not as slick as I was expecting. But then, the iPod Nano isn’t all that great looking anymore after they made it look like the Mini. But still, I was expecting more from Sony. Oh well, depending on the reviews, I may pick it up, if it’s available in the US and actually marketed. Please Sony, it’s ridiculous that you don’t even market your Walkmen over here, and limit its availability. Do you seriously expect to rival Apple if your products are almost impossible to find?
Actually, I’m starting to warm up to it. More black, less violet please Sony.

Well here it is, and oddly enough sony goes back to its roots on this one. what do I mean about roots? well it is quite simple. Let us go back to the earlier days of the HDD walkman. The entire body looks to be metal, front, sides and rear. The back is probably the same material as in the A1000 series and the side as well. All previous HD-X players from sony were metal, and quite simplistic in their design, and this seems to follow suit. Oddly enough, the volume control looks almost like it came straight off the HD-1, I guess sony tried to address the issue of the loose volume button.
The violet colour is actually blue, and depending on the ligthing conditions, the colour switches between blue and violet-blue.
It puzzled me at first why sony added the power off and home text, but it seems to have similar firmware to the older A series, holding, the Option key down will power down the player, and holding the back key down will take you back to the main menu.
I will agree with DSP, I am sort of dissapointed with the design of it, meaning, it is not what I expected from sony as a brand. Be that as it may, it still looks quite good and way better than anything on the market.
Looking forward to more pictures and details. So far sony has had a good start, I just hope they continue on both feet.
Looks like a hybrid of the NW-A1200 and a Sony Ericsson candybar phone. Nope, not an iPod killer by design/style. I guess Sony is going for functionality. Maybe they’ve really given up on the iPod killer mentality and are just going to create whatever design they want.
My big question is will it support the PSP Movie download service when it launches???? You’d haft to watch movie side-ways, though. I’m sure they’d be formatted for wide-screens as the PSP is.
Also, am hoping that they bring more colors state-side instead of just Pink and Violet like they did for the NW-A1200. I want black or blue.

I like what I’m seeing. Simple and to the point. I think people need to get off the [insert-Apple-device-here] mentality with pretty much everything that is made by anybody. I am excited to see more pictures and hear more about functionality. If battery life and sound quality are up to Sony standards, this will be a sweet device. Not to mention screen quality. Sony screens on all their devices (esp. PSP), and most of the Sony Ericsson phones, are excellent.
Price HAS to be competitive across the board, though. They cannot price themselves out of the market on this device.
Thanks for posting pics, ATRAClife. I can’t wait to hear more over the coming days.

WHAT? NO RED?!?!
J/K, black is acceptable.
I’m still hoping for something higher in capacity, though.
hmm… So far, I believe NW-S700 series is the best looking DAP in the world.
I hope NW-A800 will have great functionalities with a great sound quality.

I’ll wait with my judgement until I hold one in my hands. I never liked the A3000 much on pics and display, one day I got one into my hands and was unable to let it go.
About the design: I must admit, the very first Nano looked better than this one, except for the tiny screen, but if we compare this one to the *new* nano, which is really awful, well, sony wins.
If the front is metal like NW-HD3, I super-like it. Really cool. Black is gonna rock.
I’m a bit worried that’s an LCD, whilst I was longing for an OLED…
If it sounds like a sony is supposed to, and its price is fair (MAX 240€), I’m buying it.
Can I say it’s the most ugly walkman that sony ever made~?
I will pass this one and keep on waiting 20GB walkman or maybe I will just buy the S600 serie.

Hmm… I think it looks quite good - slick even. Is it just me? It does look rather similar to a Nano, but also like a candybar phone. The idea of a metal body is great, as is the dedicated volume controls.
Hopefully, the ‘home’ button means that the UI (which, as I understand it, was already pretty good on other A series players) has been refined somewhat.
I’m impressed.
i dont know if it is metal and comes in a variety of colors then i might buy it but im saying $150 Max is all i will pay for an 8gb mp3/mp4. especially since i got more than 8 gbs of media i was looking for a 15 or 20 gb nano killer that will put me on the list. i dont know it just seems half baked and yet another scheme for money. oh and the software cant be windows media player sync it has to be easier to use than i-tunes and it cant erase your music every time you plug it in they better start fresh.
Who’s with me?

Uhm, i agree with some comments above, the design is a bit outdated. At least from the picture above. They really have to push the features and sound quality in this product to compete with Apple Nano…
Well, design is not sooooooo out-of-date, but let’s say specs will be for sure important.
But I don’t think it’s a Nano competitor, as Nano dos not play Video (as far as I know)…
So depending on the price point and video quality, it can make serious damages…
What’s with all the negativity about a player that hasn’t even been released yet? I’ve been watching these boards for months and people having been moaning about the lack of a decent new DAP from Sony. Now that it’s been announced, the moaning has come 360 degrees and now it’s all ABOUT the DAP. And why does everything have to be compared with the Nano? Can something like this not be judged on its own merits. Seems to me that no-one on here is ever gonna be happy with anything Sony has to offer (so why are you here???). Personally, I think it looks good (without a redundant comparison to another DAP made by another company)… Looks nice and slim and the curves are cool. But without any more information about it, what else is there to say at the moment? Seems that Sony is actually making an effort.
But by all means - feel free to keep moaning. That’ll change things!

Based on this picture, I really like it! The screen size is nice to play videos on the go, and the design looks like it will be easy to use. When the specs come out, maybe it will be a good competitor, but Sony needs to get out more advertising! It’ll sell if Sony starts advertising it!

(Gizmodo US) [...]
For real sony??? The A1 range was about 18 months too late but at least it was progress!!! The new sound cancelling walkmans even look sound, but this looks like its 20 years old! The only people who will buy this is sony fans… they’re not gonna win any ground with this. And i sure hope it has the features of the a1300… intelligent shuffle and favourite tracks is awesome. Noise cancelling would be good. Why cant they follow apple whilst still being sony??? 1) Advertise, 2) MAKE IT LOOK GOOD, 3) Sony kick ass specs, 4) Floor them with the sound quality. Sony will sure have to pass with flying colours on the other three if this has got a chance against the nano.
Sorry i forgot to say. I know thisll probably get shouted down. But bring back connect player minus the bugs. If they fixed the bugs, and updated the features, its even better than itunes. I think im one of the only people who connect actually worked for… and im telling u, wen it worked- it was amazing.
Oh my God… this is horrible!
I only hope Sony sacrified the device’s good looks for at least a low price.
So is there any more news being posted before the 1st? Can we expect any more hints? Any official news about they actually expect to put videos on this thing? Any new ways to put music on it too? How about a hint on pricing?
Does anyone know if this device utilizes straight drag’n'drop or will I have to continue to use SonicStage?!?!
Also,… I think the design is “acceptable”.. nothing amazing. Just seems to get the job done. Which is fine; because generally Sony products have great sound. And to the “vs Apple” people.. are you forgetting that ipods sound like crap?

You will need to edit the installer’s SetupSS.ini file so that it will install under WinXP English. In addition, you will also need to edit SonicStage’s registry and run SonicStage via Microsoft AppLocale if you need to title your tunes in Japanese (under WinXP English environment). For more information, please venture within our forum.

I was just in Japan and they sell a US windows version in the Yodobashi-Akiba, but be prepared to pay a lot for it. I sort of regret not buying it then but I can wait till it comes stateside for much cheaper.
Dear All,
I am a samsung MP3 player fan ever since they incorporated SRS/WOW and DNSE. However, when I personally experienced the sony nw a800 series during a sony showcase display in a local mall. I was completely amazed by the vivid video display (spiderman 3 trailer) at 30fps. The sound, i was in a way made me believe in the walkman again since the sound quality was way beyond my expectations. I was thrilled with the heavy thumping bass sound, thanks to sony’s new CLEAR BASS technology (tweakable), better than the MEGA BASS. I tell you, this gadget puts sony back in contention to claim its long lost position as the leader in portable audio industry.. Walkman is back with a vengeance!!!!!!

Well.. This product is really useful one of Sony’s mp3 players. As for both it’s attractive sound quality and bright display, there’s nothing wrong. But what makes me angry is when you press a button, everybody around you can easily hear click sound.
Buttons would have been more soft
