SonicStage 4.3 with Windows Vista Compatibility Has Arrived!

SonicStage 4.3

As promised, Sony has released a new version of SonicStage with full Microsoft Windows Vista compatibility. The new update naturally is significant for those with plans to upgrade or already have upgraded their system with Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows Vista (Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Ultimate).

In addition, a Windows Vista Compatible Driver for NetMD and Hi-MD (*64 bit version is not supported) has been made available and it can be acquired from our download section of the forum or officially from Sony. Applicable models include: MZ-NH1, MZ-NH3, MZ-NH600, MZ-NH600D, MZ-NH700, MZ-NH900, MZ-NHF800, MZ-RH1, MZ-RH10, MZ-RH710, MZ-RH910, MZ-N1, MZ-N10, MZ-N505, MZ-N510, MZ-N707, MZ-N710, MZ-N920, MZ-N910, MZ-NF610 and MZ-S1.

It is also important to note that MD Simple Burner along with CONNECT Player, WAV Conversion Tool and MP3 File Manager will not be supported under Windows Vista. Accordingly, there will be no further updates for the aforementioned software. Henceforward, Sony’s music management software for its Walkman devices will be just SonicStage 4.3 under Vista environment.

And now, without further ado, ATRACLife presents SonicStage 4.3:

I don’t see a list of fixes/new features. Should I only upgrade to this if/when I switch to Vista?

I’m not finding anywhere on the Net an itemized, thorough description of the changes from 4.2 to 4.3. Is it only, solely, exclusively Vista compatibility?

16 02 2007
Craig (00:11:26) :

I don’t know if this is significant or not, but in “Help” and “About SonicStage” if you scroll all they way down the credits list, 4.3 features the Amazon.com picture logo. Version 4.2 didn’t….

Maybe it’s for album art or something. I mean it would be nieve to think it has something to do with a movie download service, wouldn’t it?

Installed on 2 XP SP2 machines without a hitch. There is a bug fix for gapless playback of WAV files.
Basically, Sony ‘introduced” a bug that prevented gapless playback of WAV files (imported or ripped) in version 4.2 - this has now (thankfully) been resolved

Didnt work for me. Using Vista Business i loaded it on but when i attempt to open it, i get a box that says, Sonic Stage has stopped working. I tried the System Information Restore Tool and thats no help. This is sure annoying as i have no way to put music on my NW-HD1. I hope they fix this problem, without it i have no way of listening to new music, ahhhhh. If anyone has any ideas, please help

Have never been able to use SonicStage for the NetMD MZ.N510 since upgraded OS from Win 98 several years ago.
Didn’t work on Millenium, 2000 nor XP SP2. So don’t expect it to work with Vista.
3rd factory built PC had same errors and all Sony can say is use a Sony viao laptop… not very encouraging. Considering how much time I’ve spent researching this problem it would be cheaper to buy a video iPod for each of my friends and family as well as the family boxer.

Always gets to the fifth track, freezes and then complains of caching/shadowing problem… x0002, xF78A, x0002 blah blah. Don’t want to burn CDs, I’ve already bought them.. just want to use the minidisc player..

Originally bought for my son, but to save our relationship I had to buy it off him so he could buy an iPod.. which has never caused a problem.

Love the sound quality I had (I still have an MD player in the car… not that I’ve been able to use that now.. much easier using the iTrip.

Is Ver. 4.3 of Sonic Stage compatible with Windows Vista Business edition? I have a new Sony Vaio with Vista Business. Ver. 4.2 is installed on it. I have not attempted to run SonicStage. I have been unable to communicate my concerns to Sony tech support. The Sony website has a red X in the column for Vista Business and check mark for Vista Home premium where you download Ver. 4.3.

18 03 2007
jamie (14:34:32) :

sally , if there is a big x it means that sonic stage is not compatible with the operating system (in this case vista business). the check mark means that it is compatible with it (in this case vista home premiuim)

Having struggled for MONTHS with the pathetic Connect software supplied with my NW-A3000 Walkman, as a last resort, I tried to download this version of Sonic Stage.
I get 9% through the process then it falls over with an error message that says “Download Failed [Open MG Secure Module]

If anyone has any suggestions on what I should do, they will be gratefully received. All I want to do is listen to music, not spend all day messing about with my pc.
I’m off to buy an iPod…

So a long time user of SonicStage and many many walkmans, and Iv’e just found out that HiMD is not compatible with Vista 64bit. So do we expect to see drivers for 64bit. This is about the final hurdle to getting rid of my 32bit Xp dual boot installation

“SonicStage 4.3 with Windows Vista Compatibility Has Arrived!” Right… well to tell you the truth (and sure this could be due to my system config, who knows?) but ‘my’ Sonicstage 4.3 crashes in Windows Vista ultimate.
I’m not gonna erase my nw-hd3 without having access to a proper version of sonicstage. Is there another app out there, vista compatible, that can handle transfers? Atrac or MP3, i don’t care! Just as long as it works!

Ryan (10:03:54) :

Just upgraded to Windows Vista Home Premium and also SonicStage 4.3. Both are terriffic, however I can’t figure out how to play some of my songs using Media Player rather than SonicStage. Is there a way to transfer songs from SonicStage to Media Player or Real Player? Since all of my songs are on SonicStage I haven’t been able to play around with Media Player to see all of the features at work. Any suggestions???

10 04 2007
Joseph (13:54:22) :

Strange…i mean, there is nothing unusual if i look at my system config. But the import of a folder or even changing program option results in an ‘hourglass’ and afterwards Vista shows the familiar mssg that the program needs to be closed… Weird that you don’t seem to have problems with Home premium edition of Vista

11 04 2007
Andrew (16:03:45) :

I’m also having real problems with Vista Home Premium and 4.3. Having just bought a new PC with a fast(ish) processor and eight times the RAM I had whilst slowly running v4.0 on XP I was hoping for a much better performance with Vista. No such luck. It is painfully slow - it takes up to 20 seconds to react to button presses or the cursor going over a menu. Even when I change the system performance level to maximise performance over how the thing looks it is still terrible. Time for that iPod I think….

Heather (06:59:09) :

Hi - I’m a complete dunce when it comes to this stuff - but I hope somenoe can help?

I recently bought a new laptop with Vista on it and successfuly downloaded SonicStage4.3 on it.

However I’m terrified that if I connect my MP3 player (NW-3000) to the new laptop, to which I have only uploaded a few recently bought CDs, the mostly empty sonicstage 4.3 will automatically synchronise with the player and erase the memory on the player leaving only the most recently downloaded CDs on it.

My old PC which in its near-death state will no longer connect to my MP3 player - meaning I’d have to go through the whole laborious process of uploading CDs again.

Does anyone know if this is a realistic worry and if so is there anything I can do to prevent it happening?- or should I just connect the darn thing and get it over with!

Peter (12:53:02) :

I have tried downloading 4.3 and it is painfully slow. I have a new fiber optic link with speeds up to 20mb/s but after 3 hours I have only been able to down load about 15mb of the update (about 12% of the total). There must be a server problem. I give up!!

I had no problems with the earlier versions on my old XP computer. Now have a new computer with Vista which will not allow me to import Cd’s or download from the connect website. I’ve installed and reinstalled several times!!! Nothing works. Help!

Alan (06:14:04) :

Wow, Sonic Stage really sucks! (yes the rumours are true)

I, like a few of you here, have the new vista premium. And the disc is 3.2 or something which doesn’t work with Vista. So fair enough, off to the web to download 4.3… only it’s no where to be seen, and the few sites that work start the installer going (which is painfully slow) and then half way thorugh it usually fails on something! What an absolute nightmare! i have a new 2GB MP3 player (NW-E005) and no f**king music on it.
As much as i hate this, i wont buy an ipod, there’s no point, they are over priced fashion accessories. I just wanted something for when i go travelling and this is a tiny MP3 Player, sadly it’s not looking good!

Anyone suggest what weapon i should use to destroy the sonic stage disk which doesnt work with vista that came with the MP3 player!?

Bought new vista computer end of feb have since been trying to download sonicstage 4.3 with no luck. Keeps telling me “installation for sonicstage 4.3 has been terminated (2051,20697). Contacted Sony UK after about a month of trying their suggestions they told me they could not replicate the fault and have sent the imformation of to Sony Europe for their technos to look at ,that was the end of march and I’m still waiting to hear something. After speaking to my local Sony shop they said they would copy a disc for me when the new video walkman arrived at the shop.

just purchased my first Sony mp3 player. The player is great! the software is a DOG. I never used a worse software in my life every click literally takes 4 - 5 seconds before i see a response.

I have a dual core AMD CPU, I think the program is bugged maybe for dual core. The fact that you can only use this program to transfer music to the player is very irking. I refused to buy sony players previously because of ATRAC support only, now thats fixed, I wish they will fix this piece of *&(( software.

Well I see that some of your comments date way back…. and I too bought a brand new laptop from Sony with Windows Vista on it…… tried downloading 4.3 because my older version won’t work. I am reading your comments and all this time later, it is sad to say the same story. Tried downloading several times, only for the program to stall 1/2 way thru and stop downloading. I called Sony direct, I have told them what was happening with me and and spoke about all of your comments here as well. They insisited I keep trying to download 4.3 as they said they could NOT send me a cd. I know have to use my OLDER laptop with Windows XP to rip cds with my ATRAC3plus software. SUCKS!!!

I have the NW-A3000 which works great on WinXP with SonicStage and Connect but that is on a WinXP machine.
On my Vista machine with SonicStage 4.3 I get an error every time I try to transfer a song to the detected Atrac audio device which is the NW-A3000.

-
Conversion to OpenMG Audio (ATRAC3) 132 kbps.
Cannot convert the specified track.
Possible reasons may include:
- The track (files) cannot be found.
- SonicStage does not support the file format of the track.
- The track is copyright protected.
-

This happen even if I only want to convert any mp3 to Atrac format.
Any ideas on how to get around this problem?

A couple of experiences to share… bought New PC (Dell) - Vista pre-installed. Sonicstage download easy. Backed up 10 GB of material from old PC. Moved backup across on memory stick and restored to new PC. All OK except the tracks purchased (probably abot £20 worth) from Connect. Sonicstage won’t play them because of lost licensing info. Emailed Sony and got email next day poiting me at the Connect website wher I was able to download them again free.

Second half… I have a Sony NW-S703F player. Whenever I plug it into a USB port (either direct or via a powered hub on the ne wVista machine and run Sonicstge it cycles through : can’t see it; finds it; reads track info; return to start. I’ve tried the hint about lowering the power on the NW advanced settings but nothin works. I can use the device to move files and Vista reads/writes. It seems to be something about Vista+SS 4.2 + NW-S703F.

Any thoughts??

I’m having the same issue with the installation failure of ver. 4.3, and the message “Installation process for Sonic Stage 4.3 has been terminated (2051, 20697).” I have Windows XP Professional and a Pentium processor.

I called Sony support. They eventually referred me to call Microsoft. In this case I proceeded with this and Microsoft tried to help, but in the end the result was the same as at the beginning of my phone call.

It appears a large number of people are experiencing this same error message, and there is no indication of what the message code means.

A Google search on the term “Sony 2051, 20697″ shows a number of messages like this.

http://www.google.com/search?q=Sony+2051%2C+20697&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=utf8&oe=utf8

Sony Sonic Stage should never have been released this way.

I bought a lovely nw-hd5 which ran fine with Windows Xp and soicstage 3.2

However as my PC failed I’ve got a new one with Windows Vista. I was told by Sony that the new Sonicstage (4.3) works with Vista but Ive never been able to install it because of the following error: 2051. 20697 which happens when installing the program. Ive tried the server install and I’ve tried the full download install.

Since many people have had this problem during installation, can I ask whether Soy is aactually trying to find out what the problem is and how it can be solved?

PETER (18:07:32) :

I have exactly the same problemas stated on 08/05/2007; so I sent off my misinfo32 and DxDiag files to sony who after several weeks told me “the problem is not being caused by a bug with the installer or the software and recommended a clean reinstall of windows and then install and test sonicstage before reinstalling other applications.”
Guess what this didn’t work (same problem). So I went to my local sony outlet who were very helpful and copied 4.3 to a disc for me still didn’t work.
Will next contact Microsofts wizards to see if they can help.

Have the same problem as NeilM, 18/06/07.

Why does Sony hate us?

We bought their product and what do we get? Lies, and the WORST SOFTWARE EVER.

Before the programmers coded SS, they played a game called “Whoever Can Drop The Most Acid In One Hit Gets To Write All The Code”. Two hours and $6400 later Sebastian won. The runner up, Tom, got to manange Consumer Suppport, hence why there is none.

You might as well put your product in the bin - as sonicstage 4.3 does not work properly in vista - it crashes so regulary I have managed to get one album on it since upgrading - sony never got this to work 100% in xp why will they bother now. It is not vista that is the problem it’s lazy progamming at sony. Do you see apple having these problems? Go and buy something that works and let everyone you know how sh1t sony’s support is.

That said, I did drop it in a muddy puddle and it still works, so top marks for hardware. Zero for software

I bought a Network Walkman NW-HD5 some years ago, when it was a premium, expensive product. Thought I could trust Sony. The ‘SonicStage’ app was trash, so much so I gave up and put the player in a dark drawer and forgot about it.

Here I am all this years later and I see SonicStage 4.3 is out. I try to install it under XP Pro and on trying to run it it cashes during install, with the error messages reported above.

Sony programmers were sh** then, and are sh** now. Back in the drawer.

Sony ‘programmers’ are a disgrace to the profession.

Same old story, new computer, Windows Vista included, NWE003F that worked fine in the old laptop with Windows XP. Results:

3.- Hating Sony and Microsoft a little bit more each day.

Max (05:47:10) :

No download or install issues here. At first SS didn’t recognise my player (NW-HD5) not sure if that was an OS issue but it was something to do with the driver. So I left it and after a number of reboots later over a few days it worked when I gave it another go.

The immediate issue now is that it wants to delete songs on the player and reformat it to be compatible. WHAT???? Not really something I want to do but I may not have a choice. I don’t understand why songs already loaded up are not a compatible format. Surely if Sony can make the PS3 backwards compatible with earlier versions, this shouldn’t be a problem here. Most of my music files are in MP3 format on the PC and I convert to ATRAC for the player (mainly because the format compresses better than MP3 - less space more songs is the theory) - I don’t keep copies of converted files once they are loaded into the player so it takes a bit of time to reload the files.

Judging from comments here, Sony seem adamant to make life difficult for customers - the last group they want to upset.

Now I hear that ATRAC is going to be killed off, a little sad since it is a decent algo. Perhaps if they had made life easier for users in the use of SonicStage they might have done better with deployment of ATRAC and there would be more life in it compared to where they are now.

Oh well, may be one day they will learn how to win at the format game. Blu-Ray anyone?

If anyone has been able to prevent having to reformat their player upon upgrading to 4.3 prior to transferring music onto the machine (especially the NW-HD5 unit) I would appreciate hearing about it.

Sonic Stage works fine on my XP machine, but both version 2.3 and 4.3 do not on Vista Home premium. 4.3 installs fine, but when loading the UI it says something like windows has encountered an unknown error and will not continue. Why such a general error? I have uninstalled and reinstalled 3-4 times. Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanx!

I’ve just bought a new laptop with windows vista on it, was really looking forward to using it, charged my mp3 player up installed sonicstage 3.4 realised it wasn’t compatible with vista, so i downloaded the new 4.3 sonicstage from google, which stated was fine with windows vista, only to discover once i had got through all the installation process that sonicstage couldn’t be opened due to a database in use or someother reason why it couldn’t open. I am really disappointed and don’t know where to turn now as this always worked fine with windows xp. What good is it having the newest windows if i can’t use my mp3 player on it. Anybody got any solutions i would be very greatful if you could e mail me. Thanks

Using Vista Home Premium I have installed v4.3 three times and each time I get the blue screen of death - Vista gave an error, wouldn’t start and I had to do a system repair. I wouldn’t recommend installing v4.3 unless you are a masochist.

FFS, how can all of us being having these issues and the issues not be addressed.

I had NO problems with Sonic Stage prior to buying a new PC with Vista on it. Now, I can’t access my NW-HD1 to play while I am on my computer or to download more music onto it.

It is driving me mad!!!!

How can there not be a solution by now and how could their programmers have allowed this update to be put out without the realization that it does NOT work??????

Niall McCathie (14:08:15) :

I have installed SS 4.3.01.14050 - no sweat. OS is XP Home 5.1 + Service pack 2.

I have many dozen Mini discs upon which I have recorded live music using a Sony microphone.

The transfer system says that it cannot move MY music to my laptop as it thinks it is NetMD music.

I though this new release would finally let me use the USB connectivity - rather than having to download MY music in real time from the earphone socket - very time consuming.

I know this limitation was originally there to protect Sony’s own pre-recorded music - but this has never caught on (anyone ever seen any??)

Anyone help me??

Sonic Stage 4.3 - Installation problems on Windows Vista Home Premium
Sorry for this long post but everyone complains about it and there seems no progress anywhere on this issue. I’ll just say what I found:

Standard web install:

My repeated attempts to install Sony’s Sonic Stage 4.3 on a brand new Sony Laptop running Vista Home Premium all failed at the same point, resulting in an error message “Installation process for Sonic Stage 4.3 has been terminated (2051, 20697)”
From reading various web forums, and this one, it seems this is not an uncommon problem.

This happened to me every time during the standard web install process, part way through the installation of the Sonic Stage component of the package, and about 30 - 40% of the way through the whole installation.

Local install:

I managed to download the installation files from Sony via an ftp link in some forum I’ve forgotten, and after cleaning up the temp files from the previous failed installation, doing a system restore and verifying the downloaded installation files were ok and the latest 4.3 version, I tried a local, as opposed to web installation.

The installation again halted each time during the installation of the SonicStage component of the package, the OpenMg components having installed ok.

Searching through the temporary installation files left behind, I found a couple of logs, which indicate a probable reason for the repeated installation failures.

Observations:

From the second log above:

File: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\
Error: The system cannot find the path specified.

My own Vista installation certainly does not follow the same user directory format as Windows XP, where you would find this folder tree as a standard part of the installation. Other Vista installations may differ I guess.

The directory tree C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ does not exist in my Vista installation due to Vista’s User Account Control. If I try to to create the directory I find it is not possible to rename a new folder on C:\ in Vista to “Documents and Settings” - reserved words?

It seems the Sonic Stage setup files are trying to create directories which cannot be created in my installation of Windows Vista, not surprisingly the installation fails.

Who knows what other problems lie yet undiscovered for me once this particular issue is resolved?

I still don’t understand how some people have managed to get this software running (crawling?) on Windows Vista without doing anything beyond the normal installation process. Did they have UAC turned off?

I think I’ll just skim my NW A-3000 across the nearest lake and get something else. It’s not worth the frustration. Sony don’t care. It’s a shame because I really liked the sound of the player (Sonic Stage worked fine with my old Toshiba laptop running XP, now sadly dead).

Tom G. (01:11:21) :

I suggest not giving up on SonicStage until you give 4.2 a try.

http://dl1.aii.co.jp/contents/connect/_data/ss/ss42_02_11020/JP/SonicStageInstaller.exe

I up graded from 4.2 (which ran trouble free on XP Home) to 4.3 which failed install as previously noted. I also had the errant self shutdown and other problems too. I managed to get back to 4.2 after some tinkering and it’s running fine. I don’t really know about Vista problems. Just goes to show sometimes an upgrade is a downgrad in disguise.

I have a NWE005 a NWA1000 Both were working fine until i got Vista amd tried to use Sonicstate 4.3 it does not even recognize them now, emialed Sony and all they could say was there must be something wrong with the hardware, I told them that both players work normally when I plug them into my ftrinds XP PC and use SS 4.3, they ignored this and I now have two paperweights I can’t use, in my last email to Sony I told them that I will never buy any of their products again, last time something simialr happened like this was when I had a Phillips MP3 player, I have never bought a product from Phillips since over hte last ten years.

I have the NW-S706F and since I got it in August I’ve had nothing but problems with SonicStage 4.3. I constantly get a message that SonicStage is not responding and I have the choice to search for a solution then close the problem, close the program, or wait for the program to respond. This is nothing but frustrating and Sony has the audacity to make it so that SonicStage is the only way to load music on the digital walkman then allow a release of the software that hardly works correctly!

And who says that SS 4.3 is Vista compatible? Maybe it is compatible with some special Vista-Sony edition, guys at Sony use, but with Microsoft Vista Business (the same with Home) it newer runs…
I think buying Sony multimedia/MP3 player was simply a big mistake from my side :( Never in my life I had so many problems with “supporting” software with any other digital appliance I do use…

Shiv (17:09:25) :

I, like many of you, have Windows Vista. And after buying a Sony MP3 player, I installed Sonicstage 4.3 from the disc that came with the player. It worked fine for a few days, but now everytime I try to go into Sonicstage it tells me that it can’t start because the database is being used by another program or the database cannot be accessed for “some other reason”. (Error code:00005e27)
Is this just because this version doesn’t work on Vista?
I swear, I am so close to buying an iPod!!

WOW! So I see many people are having this reformat problem. My gf has the same mp3 player and did not have to reformat when she upgraded to 4.3. So it is possible. Sadly she does not remember how it is done. All I can say is what the hell is wrong with sony. I guess ill go get an Ipod.

I’ve had SO MANY problems with sonicstage since i bought my VGF-AP1 in 2004. Vaio music transfer wouldn’t work for about 2-3 years, but now i’ve bought a new laptop with vista, and it doesn’t want to work at all. I just hope this sonicstage will work, and not delete everything on my mp3 like it did to my brothers….

For such a great mp3 player, the software totally lets it down.

16 08 2008
Patrick M (23:46:19) :

Finally! Sonicstage install SUCCESS with Vista and NW-002F!
1. I uninstalled 4.3 and re-installed. No luck.
2. I tried to install 4.2. Install failed.
3. I installed 4.3 without first removing 4.2 (the install program removes it automatically). Success!
Sonicstage program downloaded from:
http://esupport.sony.com/
Saved the install file to desktop before running it, but don’t think this mattered.
