NW-A3000 Running at a Turtle’s Pace?

When employing a good portion of a high capacity device such as the NW-A3000, there are instances where the internal disk can become fragmented from numerous transfers, indexing, and so forth. After some discussion in the colloquium, apparently running the defragment application within Windows upon the device will render more steadfast operation. Give it a shot (disregard Windows telling you its not fragmented), and tell us what you think..

Hello,
I’ve had my Silver NW-A3000 for a week, and was quite happy with it as long as I had only filled it with a small amount of media. But now, after filling it to about 50 % with media, it feels just like “running at a Turtle’s pace”.
I found this site and took the challenge of defragmenting my NW, using Diskeeper 10 Home as I use on my PC.
Diskeeper reported a 1.04 degree of fragm., the read speed would increase 65% for fragm. files and 1% for unfragm. files.
Defrag took quite a while (Diskeeper use to be smarter) and the NW got pretty warm.
After disconnecting the device, the library was rebuilt as usual, but now it seems much quicker to scroll files; I think it is a hit!
PS. Since I already own a NetMD (MZ-N505) I’m used to Sonic Stage, and I had already upgraded to v4 CP. Therefore I never installed the CP v1, but use Sonic Stage for the NW as well as my MD and PSP.
Sonic Stage is not as functional as iTunes, but v4 came closer; we don’t have the CONNECT service here in Sweden and this is a huge disadvantage to iTunes and Music Store with direct access to Podcast, which I find very valuble. /AW
PPS. A silver NW is very attractive, but have one big disadvantage: the screen is not readable outdoors in daylight!!
So if someone knows a hack to boost the brightness, I’m very interested. /AW
Hi,
Nice info, I discovered this form of ‘tweak’ after 2 days of usage (I made a lot of transfers
).. I was also pretty surprised, but it works… Let others know, becouse sometimes the device gets really lazy and slow…..
I have to admit I dont have a NW-A3000 but I do have the 40 gig VAIO Pocket (VGF-AP1L). And it was also moving a little sluggish and saw this artical and figured out it was time for a tune up. So before calling it a night I docked the Vaio pocket and unleashed the Windows defrag (Start,Accesories,System tools,Disk Defragmenter) on my Vaio pocket. The next morning went to the computer and it completed. Undocking the Vaio Pocket the upateding files process went alot faster than usual. After a few hours I noticed increased performance on several tasks.
1. Scrolling thru the library went faster it had a lag from time to time but it was normal and it was usually a longer lag so I was pleased about that.
2. Changing tracks to tracks speed is faster. Sometimes I would get the little thinking symbol for a bit. That is now almost gone and music playback from track to track is almost flawless.
3. General operation thru the menus are also faster even during playing music.
Very good idea for people to consider if they have a Vaio pocket or NW-A3000! I wonder if anybody out there with a HD5,HD3,HD2,HD1 have done this so we can get all the HD players confirmed. Thanks again for the Idea and keep them coming.
I have my NW-A3000 since January and I’m very happy with it. The only problem it had was about an occasional sluggishness, which was not problematic as some described it in many tech-oriented forums.
It would run at a medium pace until a few weeks ago, when it became annoyingly slow. Given the fact that I only stored 9 GB of music in the device, I immediately tried this tip when I read about it.
Wow, it really works. Thank you folks at ATRACLife! It’s like I’ve got a brand new mp3 player…
This works but wears off after a day or so.
Hi, Does anyone know where I can download the sony connect player software. I’ve mislaid the original cd that comes with the NW-A3000, Have tried useing sonicstage but to no avail.
thanks
and Dont forget.. UpGrading the FirmWare to v3.0 will make the Device 20X faster
