SonicStage CP 4.0 Has Finally Arrived!!
SonicStage CP 4.0 has finally arrived! As mentioned in our previous report, the new SonicStage CP 4.0 includes full support for features exclusive to the WALKMAN A Series. Therefore, we were hoping Sony will finally make SonicStage a fully unicode software since it’s been tweaked to support the WALKMAN A Series. Unfortunately, unicode support has yet to be implemented with this update. On the bright side, it is already apparent that there is a substantial increase in the navigational speed, especially in previously laggy areas such as ‘My Library’. Accordingly, SonicStage CP 4.0 now supports the following WALKMAN devices:

Seems to be MUCH faster than Connect.
And it’s easier to use, has nicer UI, but I’m still waiting for something working under linux…

Ok… I can’t tell you how much I’m disappointed by this poor update: STILL NO UNICODE! and worse than that, I can’t even import the japanese tracks I ripped with Connect Player! this pisses me off a LOT! how could they do this? how the users are supposed to migrate from Connect player to Sonicstage CP if they already encoded japanese infos (or else) with Connect player? this is a big BIG stupid move! I’m so MAD.
If somebody can tell me I’m wrong please DO!

Its great that SS now supports the NWA series, but a bit dissapointed otherwise.
Was hoping for some improved functionality, such as folder management that exists in Connect player - you set up imported CDs to be ripped to organised folders (e.g. //folder/artist/albumname)
Has anyone yet tested whether the ‘bug’ with respect to converting Atrac lossless to low bit rates has been solved - the use of the lossy part of Atrac lossless to do the conversion
Also, this version does not appear to be compatible with AAC lossless (Apple codec)
Any particular reason why there’s no Sony Europe download?
Has anyone any idea of when the Europe download will be posted? Also since i have the UK model do i need the european version? or does it not matter?

I was wondering what the difference between the various download locations was, apart from geography, but went with the US version anyway.
I now know that the difference is the Connect Store. As far as I can see, the location has a direct effect here - I’m in Europe and so the US version won’t let me access the store.
Any idea when the Europe version will be available?

Finally something useful from Sony - works without problems. It is much faster and reliable. Get rid of Connect Player IMMEDIATELY! I have done so with no regrets at all….

I guess the whole world and his dog are downloading or you haven’t put enough servers online to deal with the demand. This installer has been running for 45 mins and I am only 20 percent done. Is there any reason why i can get this file as a complete set of install fies downloaded from other places with more bandwidth?

It says it supports All NW-A series… does this include the NW-A608??… Can you use this sonnic stage, regardless of what version is your product?
its a bit faster and the link thing is working better but its still far from perfect. The sync. function seems to be a bit unstable.

one thing they missed out is… no Korean language support for Japanese version. Japanese ConnectPlayer did support Korean and other languages. I don’t know they left out other languages in SonicStageCP(4.0).
SonicStageCP works great!
But one thing they left out from Japanese SonicStageCP is no other language support, which Connect Player had. Kanji support works just same as Connect, which can be organized under Kana menu to find a song in NW-A1000/3000. But when I import Korean CDs, I get bunch of question marks, while Connect Player has no trouble in reading Korean characters.
Installed on two desktops with Windows XP.
Both without a hitch and connection with hd5 intact.
Seems a lot faster.
Still working on what has changed and any other benefits, however even if only for speed improvement, is worth it.

So Far so Good. The new firware update and sonicstage ver. 4 seem to be working better than previos versions, after almost tossing my NW-A1000 out the window on many occasion I think I wil keep it for a while more and finaaly enjoy all of the features.

Aside CONNECT Music Store, UK and US versions are known to require “Initialization” of your ATRAC device upon every new SonicStage update. This is especially true for older Network Walkmans.

Because SonicStage CP 4.0 is not fully unicode, you will need to apply a registry edit as I’ve outlined in this guide.
hi, im having problems registering with gracenote, it keeps telling me that the response from the cddb server had bad syntax, can anyone tell me what this means and how to fix it?
So is it better or worse than Connect Player?

Confirmed that it’s worse for me than Connect Player, and the previous version of SonicStage as well:
I have a UK NWA-3000. SSCP first said that the Intelligent Features would not work with my device (!) so I disabled them. SSCP then told me that I would have to erase all the tracks or initialise my device before I can use it. SS3.4 didn’t even ask me to do that.
So I’m going back to CP.04 - at least it doesn’t require me to transfer all my tracks again (at USB1.1 speeds, unfortunately).

You may want to try and apply the “Gracenote CDDB Update Patch.” The patch will essentially update your software to use the most current version of Gracenote CDDB available.
I take it all back Sony finally put the european version of ss4-cp out and the connect music download page is now there..
The software seems to load withing about 120 seconds much better than connects 15 minutes or never depending on how it felt.
Most of the albums I have transferred from my hard drive now have Artist link and it seems to work on the player too.
Will try and empty player soon and re-transfer to see if I have the same problems I wrote about before,hopefully not but I will be honest if I do..
Lets hope its all systems go and I dont have to reboot several times as last time ,its a pain..
Keep on tweaking mr sony your stage may just be becoming Sonic..
Oh and the firmaware update does make the unit a bit quicker,the menu system seems a bit more intuitive ? but the buttons definatley are harder to push to work and it looks like the battery is going down quicker I will keep an eye on it..
At least more of the units functions now work as they should have done first out the Box…
Still problems with importing between Connect and Sonicstage. I was expecting a better solution for Connect users to make importing to Sonicstage more seamless.
i installed it but still have the same syntax error, what do you think is causing the problem? ive installed sonicstage cp on another computer and it was fine. ive re-installed cp 3 times and still no solution. any suggestions?
I got a strange error when I started up my computer about a driver problem or something, seems to be working OK though. Syntax error? When does it appear?
In that case, you will need to uninstall SonicStage CP 4.0 (please backup your music library before doing so) and run a registry cleaner such as CCleaner. If you should have further problem, try and report it within the “Software” section of our forum.
Have you resolved this issue? This could be an isolated driver problem. Nonetheless, ensure that “USBSTOR.SYS” exists within “c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\” and it’s not modified or corrupted so to speak. In addition, please report this issue within this thread should the problem persists.
How come it won’t read the id3 tag from iTunes encoded .m4a files? Was really hoping for an easy solution to upload music to my player.

Seems to run ok, but I get “transfer not allowed” when I try to encode stuff, but it transfers ok if I leave it in MP3/WMA :\.

i like the new version a lot, especially because it comes with a huge firmware-update for my nw-a3000. Unfortunately SSCP ist still unstable when transfering a rather huge number of files, but transfering max 200 tunes at once and then closing and restarting the program works. When crashing, SSCP makes the files you just transfered to your atrac device unusable.
considering the features that were missing as of this update, i think SSCP is quite an improvement. considering stability, it’s still the same old shite

I find it generally doesn’t find artist link information for tracks on compilation CDs. I then select an individual track and click “CD info”. It then finds the track and asks me to select the track from a list which generally includes the CD I am loading. When I select the track, it updates all the information, including the artist link info but then it overwrites the artist with Various Artists, which is the artist for the whole CD (because it’s a compilation) I guess it doesn’t find it originally because it finds the right song and disc but the artist is Various Artists.
This sounds like a bug.
Tip to all turn off ALL intelligent settings they are not they hang the connect to the A608 series for ridiculous amounts of time. My last connect to transfer music took 8 mins then sonic stage crashed and wiped out the database on the device. Most UNINTELLIGENT setting so far! This is untill i turned it off!
Don’t try and rename tracks on the device once converted that takes forever since it seems to try to re-encrypt it. Sony you should stop this functionality for at least flash a warning before allowing someone to rename a track after its been encoded to the device.
3 no databases after Sonic stage crashes while trying to do what ever its trying to do. When it works its great but man when your converting and filling 2 gig over again its a pain in the ass specially 3 times.
And for crying out loud please allow me to select a view on my A608 when its connected, ALBUM ONLY not fucking Album(by artist) when you have compliation albums this is a mess, especially when you are trying to remove 1 album
out of 5 that are all compilations and may have the same artists on them.THIS ONE IS REAL EASY PLEASE FIX IT IT WORKS ON THE OTHER NW walkmans why not the A608?!

this tells it what to populate into the fields of the drop down so that you can sortthe view of contents of your A608 properly. I.E. by albums or as they say “group”.
YAY fixed now put it in the next release so i don’t have to hack it again.
Use something like Edit Plus to view the line numbers in those files.

I’ve been trying to make SonicStage 4.0 tranfer some albums to my A3000, which have 1.9Gb left. But when transfering just one album, the program says it cannot transfer the songs, and trying again it tells me I dont have enough space, and I have to restart it to try again.
Any ideas?? You know if I have to format again my A3000??? I next weeks I have my uni exams and I dont want to spend my time on the unit.

After some tries in which SonicStage didnt allow me to transfer songs, Ive formatted my unit, and now the software goes almost perfect!! Full functionality for me at last!!
The only problem is trying to transfer huge amount of songs (2000+), so I think I have to transfer it album by album.
Definitely, SonicSatge is much better than Connect. My Artist Link button now annoy my friends!!

Why oh why would they use a 2 part internet installer and then give no options to input your proxy settings. What is it with Sony software developers, do they actually use this software ??
Why not just give a full download of the software, they claim that the installer will detect the version of windows and download the appropriate version
I’m with all of you - for full SS 4.0 download! Some of simly want to archive programs and to install it later, etc.
It’s taken (most of!) a working day (thank goodness i work from home…), my PC has blue screened once, I’ve had to delete all the songs from the Walkman and start again, but now everything seems to be working…
Apart from the fact that it won’t let me copy over the one ‘freebie’ album I downloaded (i.e. paid for) from the Connect store.

Can anyone tell me PLZ what’s the purpose of calendar? It only shows for 1.5sec then it disappears.
I was trying to unlock the volume, but I am unable to enter the test mode with my NW-A3000; no “OPTIONS” or “SP SET”; only weird stuff like “POWER”, “ARD”, “AWR”, “VCHK” that does nothing. Any ideas PLZ?

I’m not aware I’d have done anything different from what I did already before but suddenly the test mode works fine, and SP SET is now OFF
used verion 4 on A3000 a few times no problem then it locked up after trying to connect for 7 mins with an error on the PC ” cannot use intelligent facilities becaus the connected antrac device does not have the updated database. Disconnect and connect device again to update datbase. Did just that and go same error again and again. disconnected and started A3000 up and al the music files had disappeared 2200 of them. WTF. reconbnect - same error. Had to initialize disk again and reload files and all works again. but 5 days on and same problem. Also finding music files on A300 is much slower after upgrade.

I have had a problem with Sonic Stage CP and Windows Media Player 11 (Beta). When I installed the latter on my PC (Dell Deimension 4550 with fairly standard specification running Windows XP), I was no longer able to transfer music to my NWA-3000 device. I reinstalled Sonic Stage CP but after this could not even open the software properly. I rolled back to WMP10 and reinstalled Sonic Stage CP and this has resolved the problem.
can someon help. I don’t appear to have problems with the software. However, when I attach my player the new hardware wizard starts and comes up with the error messagecannot instal……the data is invalid. What on earth do i do. I have uninstalled / reinstalled software several times. Reset the player and initialised the disc to no avail. I really want to keep this player butrefuse to have a £150 paper weight!
Have been putting SonicStage CP through it’s paces. Seems same as 3.4 for my purposes. Fastest workflow for me seems to be to create the ATRAC lossless-356. If I try to rip to wav and convert, it has a hard time finding the album in cddb even if I put in the right title and artist. Haven’t tried converting to mp3 yet. It did let me back up and restore to another machine, but that’s a very slow way to move a database when I have all my music an external usb drive anyway.
An annoyance is that when ripping on 3 machines (windows xp pro, home and 2000) it doesn’t detect that I’ve changed the CD even if I run the CD test again and tell it to refresh. Only fix is to exit and restart SonicStage. I tried ripping to WAV with CDex and importing, but too much trouble with the cddb for album info. Any ideas?
for some reason sonicstage cp wont recognize my memory stick pro duo. I am using the memory stick adapter instead of the usb cable and its connected to my printers memory stick slot
I had been using 3.4 and it worked ok? Now it doesn’t work at all? I just downloaded 4.0 and it doesn’t seem to want to work either?
After working fine for 9 months I am all of a sudden unable to transfer tracks into my player - an “Error Report” tells me I am unable to transfer tracks with no further explanation - anyone have any ideas?
Can anyone tell me how to turn off the intelligent features? Since I turned these on, when I go to select all tracks by one artist the player skips down to all tracks by the artist that is below the one I originally selected. Its starting to get on my nerves! Thanks
My sonicstage said my atrac device didnt have updated database so couldnt use intelligent features, i turned these off (Tools-Options-Transfer-Click on the ATRAC device in the box-Click Transfer Settings- then advanced-then Intelligent Features in one of the tabs) however this didnt help at all and now i when i click Transfer Settings nothing happens, so turn them off at own risk. Anyone got any clues to get some some tunes transfered successfully? cheers

I have tried and tried to fet sonic stage to work with Windows ME, but no matter what I try it is not working. Can anyone help me out here? I only have one computer and spent lots of money on this new Sony Mp3 player. I tried to get help from SONY and they sent me to Microsoft which no longer offers help for Windows ME. Has anyone else had ettors that said Soic Stage 00000908-645 “Cannot find the files needed to run the database. Exiting sonic stage. Error Code 00005e30″ and then a second box that comes up saying Omgjbox has caused an error in OMGJBOX.EXE Omgjbox will now close HELLLLLLLLLPPPPP PLEASSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEE!
How many GB can be stored in SonicStage : 4.0.00.05080. It says I have 8.9 Free, but how many did I have to start with?
I`m trying to get my NW E-002 on Sonic Stage 4.0…used 3.4 till yet…but still the same problem: I can`t make up a “various artists”-album…”my library” splits it iunto all the artists ans original albums…so I can`t listen to my mixed albums…just every song in it`s seperate album..
can/how can i change that…need help, please!!!

You need to reinstall your Sonic Stage and put your player INTO THE USB-Point in your PC…it worked with mine and i hope your`s will be fine again, too..
I’m having problems with this new sonic stage CP.
ive whenever it starts up its tries to convert the sonic stage database, but then the little app just freezes and i cant go any further.
ive tried rolling back windows media player to 10 from 11 beta but it didnt make any difference.

Sonic stage 4 C(ra)P does not support aac files! i have to rename them from .aac to stupid .mp3 to import them. After importing, no tags appear, just raw filename. And transferring to player of course fails because of some another error. (some legal bullshit)
The second fuckup about ss4cp is that i cannot add files to library any more! It simply started to popup error message “Cannot find music files that are not registered to SonicStage. (Error Code: 00007180)”. Besides the fact that this sentence is complete bullshit, nonsence and so on…, it has no reason to appear, because it did not do it b4!!!!!!

How about an English patch for the Japanese version.
I have a Japanese version of XP, (which will not allow installation of English versions of SS), but I can’t read much Japanese, an English patch would make life much easier.

Hi, i downloaded SS4 and find it to be excellent as my music player, however, when i’m transferring files to my nw-a3000, all of a sudden it freezes and this happens when im transferring any amount of songs, even when it’s only 100 or so. I’ve downloaded the firmware update and i’ve tried everything i no to sort it, but it’s just being completely useless. Can anyone help?
I own a Sony NW-HD5 and rescently i updated to SonicStage 4.0.
After updating, my library was empty and when i tried to import a folder i always get the same error message: “Cannot find files that are not registered to Sonic Stage. Error code 00007180″. The files play perfect on other programs like iTunes or windows Media Player.
I own about 2000 mp3 tracks (and payd for it, believe it or not)
I just initialised the HD of my NW-HD5 so now i cannot listen to the tracks i paid for…

if i had known about the sonic stage, i will never buj any Sony mp3 player. I/m greatly disappointed. It’s odd to use only one stupid program to operate with the player. I only want to transfer music file in and out the player, i DO NOT NEED ANY MEDIA LIBRARY AND OTHER FUNCTIONS. Is it too hard for Sony to make simple small program just for transferring files?

HERE’S THE SOLUTION TOO THE: “Cannot find music files not registered to sonicstage. Error 00007180″.
Forget about using the SonicStage feature too import music to the library; here’s what to do:
1) Open SonicStage and go to “ATRAC Audio Device” (the screen where you transfer your music to the player)
2) Open your music folder on a separate window and just drag and drop your music onto the SonicStage.
Note: If you already have some of those songs on the SonicStage library, it will give you the message again, so MAKE SURE SOME OF THE FILES YOU’RE TRANSFERRING ARE NOT ALREADY THERE. IF SO, DELETE THEM FROM THE “SONICSTAGE” LIBRARY FIRST.
It took me a while to figure out this biach; hope it works for you too!
Ok guys I DID had the same problem:

I noticed the tracks that i could not import did not have tag information (Artist, Album, Genre…. etc). So i simply gave them tracks tag information and HEY PRESTO! I can now transfer this file to my device.
Still this is really annoying as i have many tracks i have recorded onto my pc, all without tags. Thanks Sony, Surely you should design software with ease of use in mind and with no drag and drop function or the ability to use other software to upload you should surely win the Worst Software Developer Award in my mind, but who am i?….

Cannot find music files that are not registered to Sonic Stage. Error code 00007180
I struggled with this for a while too. I was dubious about what some people were saying…that this error comes up only when the track has already been imported because it was happening to me with mp3’s not seen in my library. However, when I viewed my library by “all tracks”, they were indeed there. I stumbled upon this after right clicking one of my mp3’s and going to properties>summary>advanced and deleting the album name…the import then worked and I was surprised to see that I now had two copies of this song in my library.
What a joke this software is! I spent al lot of time trying to decide between different mp3 players, and I think I may take my sony back to Sears and spent the extra $50 for an iPod.

i will never buy a sony mp3 player again.
I got a new laptop, and so i transferred the tracks that i already had on my HD5 sony mp3 player. the tracks transferred succesfully, but i am unable to play the songs from my software. it says it cannot be played because the licensing information cannot be retrieved… is there a way that i can fix this problem??
for the above comment, the error code that comes up is 000084e0… really need help on this! and i know there must be a way round it!
i am having the exact same problem, please tell us the answer as i dont want to spend 2 days putting all ,my cds back on new pc!!!!!!!
There is a program called ‘MP3 File Manager’. It is good for transferring music to your player. That is however all you can do and you can’t remove it afterwards (not to use anyway). I have been forced to use it as previous versions of Sonic Stage just crashed at startup. Trying this new one now…. it hasn’t crashed….yet!!!

I am having trouble with sonistageCP in particuler error messsage000084e0. i record with a minidisc recorder to sonicstage there for there IS no lisencing imformation But because there is’nt (and never will be because i recorded the tracks) any imformation i cant play the tracks i have recorded so can someone please HEEEEELP me

i got a problem with my nw-e002f mp3 player i fomatted the player then i all that comes out to the screen is no data. any one can give me an advice how to fix my mp3 problem?
well at first when i install SS it worked fine no problems at all. Went to us eit the other day wouldnt detect my NW-A300. Hmm ok then. Loaded Connect Player no problems. went to stick some songs on.. oh no it aint gonna have it. It said they where transferring, when i turn player on they aint there and then they disapper off connect. Hmm tried sonic share again after 10 attempts and there it is my NW-A300 is detected. Now i cant get it to work again. Anyone that can offer any help please do. THanks
For all who are so excited about this don’t be, Sonic Stage sucks and will always suck. They try to control everything and make it so difficult with their crappy software to simply transfer mp3 files. I hate them and I will never ever buy anything form them or Sony again. I have the clunky crappy Sony Walkman NW-HD3 and I hate the damn thing. It simply won’t transfer some of my mp3 tracks and I have been on many forums and everyone feels the same it is crap, plain a simple. We do not like them controlling what we want to play on our Walkman’s, we want drag and drop ability. What a waste of good money. Sonic and Sony if you bother to listen to your unhappy customers than make a change, not that I would buy anything from you again.
i have a 1gb sony mp3 but my sonice stage 3.4 says that it only has 455mb does anyone know how to fix my problem?
Hi I have been using sonicstage for the last couple of years and have found it great to use. however today it wont play as error 000084e0 has come up on screen my full collection is on my pc. what is going on? I have defended and resisted others attempts for me to go to ipod and itunes as I have always found the interface and working of sonicstage to be simple and it works. However now your going to change and today I cant hear my music ! Help.
I’m just another victim. I bought the Sony NW-S705F earlier this year because of the features that the player offered - good memory size, small form factor, and most importantly noise canceling. I checked the reviews on the player and was satisfied. My mistake was not checking the reviews for the software that comes with it. When I was on XP I had the 4.1 version installed which worked O.K.. I suspect this is because I never got around to loaded my full library. Shortly after I upgraded to Vista. It took me a few months to get around to updating the Sonic Stage software because it was a low priority at the time. I had some music on my player so I wasn’t in a hurry. I’ve finally gotten tired of the same old music and decided to try to update it. I couldn’t find my original install disk for sonic stage so I downloaded the software from Sony - v.4.3. I’ve had nothing but problems since. I have issues from software locking up, software only importing a portion of my library (some albums aren’t imported), sluggish response, and all of the previous lack of management capabilities. I’ve spent days of my own time trying to import my music and search for solutions. So far the cost of my personal time spent trying to get this software to work has far outweighed the cost of purchasing a new non-sony device. This is the last forum that I will search trying to get it to work. I’m past my return the product to sony option, so this product will go into a drawer or the trash. For those who think the software is great and works fine, I suspect that you don’t have a very large personal library. I’ve been collecting my music for nearly a decade now and have a library of over 40k tracks. This software simply cannot handle really large music libraries. It’s sad really, by poorly supporting one of their product line Sony will negatively influence the buying decisions on all of their product lines. I know it has for me. How much does a team of really good software engineers cost anyway? When does the profit loss start making not hiring a good team a bad business decision?
This is the very last time I bought Sony gear. I have fallen for their dismal quality and design once too often,
I give up, and really hope they go bankrupt this time…
Pathetic hardware and software… some ideas such as Betamax were good though… a shame.
I have been using SonicStage for over a year now and up until I changed PC (and unfortunately had to switch to Vista also), it was working fine. Since then, I have had nothing but constant trouble and aggravation with it. After a number of error messages which I was subsequently able to fix I have now come to a dead end with error 000084e0. Its ridiculous. The error message says, “The licensing information can’t be retrieved” and “contact the source from which you received this track”!! They are from my CD’s! Does anyone have any clue how to get around this? It would be much appreciated. And will Sony please get its act together and allow their own clients to listen to their own music and sort these stupid problems out. I am so frustrated am tempted to simply chuck my player out the window, hang my head and go out and buy a bloody Ipod after all.
Toujours le mëme problème 00084e0, inutile de dire qu’il n’y a pas de solutions(lorsque tu change de PC, ça n’aura servi à rien d’avoir garder HiMd puisque tu ne peux pas le lire à nouveau)…. C’est nul de ne plus pouvoir y acceder.. heureusement que je les ai mis en wav ces “putains” de sons…Hi-MD, c’est trop pourri..Et alors ne parlons pas du Net-Md, trop bien d’avoir enregistrer tout ça si je ne peux pas le transférer…
