New Sony WALKMAN CE-P | Mp3/WMA Player
We are definitely expecting Sony to announce a series of new products this quarter. But to our surprise, Sony China announced yesterday of a new flash based Mp3/WMA player – the CE-P series – which does not support ATRAC format. The CE-P series (CE-P13, CE-P15 & CE-P17) will be strictly an Mp3/WMA player, which features a 1.5″ 260K color OLED display with built-in FM tuner, FM recording, voice recording and ability to view BMP/JPEG files. According to themp3players.com, the new CE-P series is the first ever Sony DAP designed in China – by Sony China Creative Center based in Shanghai.
The CE-P13 , CE-P15 and CE-P17 will be 256MB, 512MB and 1GB respectively and will join the new NW-A00x series we have just reported as Sony’s new low budget DAP line. The MSRP published by Sony China are as follows:
- CE-P17: 1GB, black and gold* color, RMB1199 (approx US$150)
- CE-P15: 512MB, black, silver and red color, RMB999 (approx US$125)
- CE-P13: 256MB, black, silver and red color, RMB799 (approx US$100)

*Note: The gold color CE-P17 will only be available from SonyStyle China. In addition, we suspect that the CE-P series could very well be an exclusive regional release. In other words – an exclusive Chinese domestic market release or possibly limited to Asia-Pacific as well.

Not very appealing. No atrac=useless. Not much capacity either. Is its JPEG display really necessary on such a small screen? I don’t get it. One more proof that SONY is split in hundred of pieces across the world, and let every of them do what they want without any unity!!!
Nonsens, once again…
“We are definitely expecting Sony to announce a series of new products this quarter”
Do you think Sony will release a new HDD series?
I´m planning to buy a NW-A1000, should i wait?
About these players, seems a joke they release a 256MB player
Hopefully a sign of things to come.
It’s good to see players with color screen, but it’s bad to see no support for Atrac. Sony needs to figure out a way of dealing with Atrac that doesn’t require the cumbersome OpenMG. They allow unprotected files now, there’s no point in not allowing widespread use.
I just hope this doesn’t signal a Sony focus only on small capacity players. I hope there is a NW-A3200 around the corner, or maybe even something else, with a gorgeous OLED color screen.
Will this player be released under the Walkman brand?
@ seachicken: Yes, it appears so.
A very well designed player, the reason why atract is not supported is quite obvious to me. In China, people usually generalise portable music players as just ‘mp3′, just like generalising Metal with Heavy Metal. If you get what I mean, the mass would not have any interest in other formats.
This is a typical cash-in from Sony, though attractive!
From the flash site, it says that it supports simple drag & drop, and it has an custom EQ!? Does that mean a Digital Presets function like the HD5 or…?
These will be available from the end of April 2006 across Europe.
You must have mistook the CE-P for the NW-A00x series. Thus far, the CE-P series seemed to be an exclusive Chinese domestic market release.
it looks like for china only, and I don’t expect it at all.
I’d rather to see something comes out by SONY VAIO department, such as VGF-AP1.
even it’ll never happened.
